Chapter 16: No Greater Loss
Heather slowly takes out her keys to open the door to her classroom at the end of the day. Her boyfriend follows her close by. Phillip was in the mood, but according to protocol, fraternizing in school grounds is strictly off limits and incredibly risky. He didn't care, but Heather did.
"C'mon, just one kiss, huh?" he softly whispers into her ears.
"Not now, I have to finish grading these tests and I have a report-."
Cut short by a kiss. They enter the room and once again, Heather sees John and Dr. Reginald. Only that this time, John's eyes and nose are red and he has tissues in his hand. Adding everything up, she quickly jumps to the most obvious reason for this scene. Silently, Heather breaks down to pieces.
"Ms. Jefferson", says Dr. Reginald, "I am so sorry."
"No, you can't be serious, no!" she says in a broken voice. She grabs the nearest chair to sit on.
While this happens, Phillip leaves without something to say or nothing. It didn't seem like this was going anywhere he wanted.
"There was a complication while we ran some tests with Jason. We did all we could to save him, but it was too late."
She muttered "no" over and over. She has her hands covering her eyes as she cries; tears begin pouring down her arms.
Dr. Reginald has to make them react. They've wasted too much time and they needed to be ready for the funeral.
"Mr. Lopez, I believe it's time for you and Ms. Jefferson to get a move on. The Funeral Home is expecting your arrival and you still need to get ready. I can call a taxi or someone to pick you up."
"No that's fine, uh, thanks. I think I'll take Heather to her house so that she can dress up for the funeral."
"Alright then, I'll get my people working on everything for the funeral. You guys don't have to worry about a thing. All you guys need to do is get ready, please."
Heather wipes her face and asks, "Um, when will Jason be put on display?"
"Doctor, please, don't…" says John biting his lip.
"Wait, what's wrong?" says Heather shocked.
"No, doctor please don't say nothing." Says John, now tearing up and shaking his head.
"Heather, please sit down" says Dr. Reginald.
"Doctor, what is wrong with Jason's body?"
"Jason was incinerated."
Heather's left eye twitches.
"Unbelievable… You kill my son, make it look like an accident, and then you burn him up to cover the evidence."
Heather breathes irregularly and loud. Then she starts to shiver and twitch all over, her fingers start to cringe and curl. Her eyes start to water and become blood shot. Fixing her eyes on Dr. Reginald, she launches herself to attack him. She screams,
"You murderer!!!"
"NO!" shouts John.
John grabs a hold of her quickly and yanks her towards him. She struggles to try and break free, but is unable because of John's hold on her body, wrapping his arms around her tightly.
"You… murdered him…" says Heather crying and sobbing on John's shoulder. John is crying as well. They slowly fall to their knees and weep to each other, not caring of the world or of life or of school or of the floor. Jason is gone to them. Literally taken from their hands and made to vanish into dust and ash.
The doctor watches the scene from Heather's desk, feeling nothing of what has happened. The Lopez Jefferson Family is as important to him as the Mexican guy that washes his car. That's what he felt for Henry as well, only bringing him trouble and a bad name. Reginald only wants to see the end of this hubbub and get over with the Jason Jefferson case as soon as he can. He turns to see Principal Moore outside of the room in the hallway. Mr. Moore raises his eyebrows to see what's next to do. Dr. Reginald nods his head once and Mr. Moore heads his way, dialing the funeral home's number. Dr. Reginald ducks his head to hurry the sobbing pair,
"Mr. and Mrs. Lopez, now is the time."
